TE NIKAU
Half Day Experience
If you’re hungry or would like to try hāngi, then this could be the experience for you.
Starting at the legendary Arahura Bridge Heritage Park. You'll be greeted with a warm mihi (welcome), engaging whakawhanaungatanga (introductions), and a thorough safety brief before we embark on our journey.
We will walk a short distance to our beautiful marae of Arahura. Here, you will listen to, and witness, some of our stories, trials and tribulations of our people’s journey, past and present and what the future holds for us.
Then we will make our way to our hāngi site, where you will watch and hear the food preparation and protocols before lowering the hāngi into the ground to cook.
We will then take a short walk to the awa, where our pounamu stories come to life. Indulge in stories of our travels, battles and their significance to our people. This should build up your appetite.
On return, the hāngi will be lifted and served as we have a hākari (feast) together and share more stories. Arrive as manuhiri, leave as whānau.
